Masoor Dal/Red Lentil Soup (without onion garlic)

Dal is a pretty common dish in every Indian household. There are various types of dals used in Indian kitchens today. Here I'm gonna use Masoor dal /red lentils. Masoor dal should be in our daily diet as it controls our blood sugar level. It also reduces the blood cholesterol level so it keeps our heart healthy. It's a good option for those who are trying to lose weight. The recipe is quite simple and the flavors are amazing also. The recipe consists of a few ingredients, like some spices, tomatoes and curry leaves. It will give you a balanced taste. Not too spicy or not too tangy. A hint of sugar is balancing the whole taste here. This Masoor dal is a healthy side dish that can go with almost everything, maybe roti or rice. It can also be served as soup in winter. It can be a quick soup for kids or adults when the small hunger comes in bothering us. Here I'm sharing a recipe for two servings. You can adjust the quantity of ingredients according to your requirements.

Ingredients:

4 tbsp Masoor dal/Red lentil

2 dried red chilies

2 cups water

2 large tomatoes chopped

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp kashmiri red chili powder

1 tsp panch phoran

1 string curry leaves

1 tbsp sugar

oil

salt as per taste

Method:

Soak the Masoor dal in water half an hour before cooking. Boil the Masoor dal with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. If you are boiling in a pressure cooker, cook it until 3 whistles on medium flame.

Heat the oil in a kadai. Add panch phoran and splitted dried red chilies. Let it splutter. Add curry leaves. Now add chopped tomatoes.

Add salt and turmeric. Give it a stir. Add kashmiri red chili powder. Give it another stir. Cover and cook in low-medium heat.

Cook the tomatoes until they turn little bit mushy. Now add the boiled dal. Simmer it for few minutes on low-medium flame.

Add sugar. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes. You can adjust the consistency as per your choice by adding water or reducing it. Stir it occasionally to avoid burning.

It can be served hot with rice or roti.
